I have to say I didn’t know what to expect from a walking tour around Fremantle, but I was very pleasantly surprised.

Ryan was our tour guide, and we did the ‘Convicts and Colonials’ tour. Ryan was knowledgeable and I mean really knowledgeable. He knew everything about this subject and so much more. It was so interesting listening to the stories and facts he had about the town he clearly loves.

We started at the main city centre walked through a refurbishment project the local business owners have created, we then took a walk through to the old police station. Ryan was very good at setting the scene and took us back in time almost with his renditions of the convicts escapes from Fremantle prison. From there we then took a walk up to the prison and had a look at the free public areas available, we liked it so much we went back there the following day to take a tour. We continued walking through the centre of town, down the main road which had some of the oldest taverns which used to house the first settlers of convicts.

We then took a walk to the shoreline and Ryan told us about the most elaborate escape plan possible, it’s an amazing story. I won’t share it with you because I think you need to do the tour for yourself. I would recommend this tour to everyone and if you have time stop and stay for the canon firing it’s awesome, just don’t head to the airport afterwards as you get stopped for having gunpowder on you, yep. Trust me!
