Just what exactly comes to mind when you think of a jazz concert?
Well, my impression is, a dark artistic style basement with low lighting, rather dedicated set of music fans! Well, it wasn’t a basement we went too but a church, yes a church! The composer was debuting his latest work with a small local choir; it was nothing like I was expecting and that was incredible, even a little humbling. We weren’t far from Dortmund in Germany; it was our first night with our hosts, and they took us to see this jazz concert.
It was free to enter, all in German and we sat in the stunning surroundings of this beautiful church. We didn’t know what to expect at all. The choir who accompanied the jazz band of three, sung and played beautifully, I closed my eyes and soaked up the beautiful, humbling music. I never had in my life experienced something so beautiful; I had to keep telling myself it was all real; this English girl was sitting in this amazing church in the middle of Germany, listening to brand new compositions.
It was humbling but exactly what our adventure is about, experiencing life like locals, if we had booked a hotel, we would have never of had this experience.
