THE GREAT BARRIER REEF HQ GIVES YOU SOME OF THE BEST VIEWS OF THE REEF WITHOUT GETTING WET!
So when you think of the barrier reef, what do you think. The beautiful corals? The animated clownfish of Finding Nemo? Either way, here you will see both.
Tucked away at the end of town you have the Great Barrier Reef HQ Aquarium.
Full of sharks, fish, and coral. It certainly is a place you can visit unbleached coral in its glory. Admitted, it is not as colourful as the movies portray it to be. But you can get a sense of wonder that is the Great Barrier Reef itself. So you have educational talks going on throughout the day, from the predator dive show (which has you interacting with one of the divers in the shark tank) to visiting the Turtle Hospital.
So you find out all about the different animals, such as the giant sea turtles. We were fascinated to know that their main diet is seagrass. Where Although the exterior does not turn green, the insides turn slightly green. We were even shown the skeleton skull, and where the brain goes. It is so small; it is a wonder that the female turtles will return to the beach they hatched from to lay her eggs. Which could be, thousands of kilometres away!
You have so many different exhibits here at the Great Barrier Reef HQ; you can easily spend all day here. Soaking up the knowledge you get told throughout the day. Either bring a packed lunch or eat at their cafe, while watching all the coral fish swimming past.
All in all, an excellent and informative day out. A must for all those that want that coral experience without spending hundreds of dollars!
