BurgerFuel is a company with a chain of restaurants that quite honestly I had not heard of until going to New Zealand. It was the first experience for me even though they have a few across the pond in Australia and a few in other countries too. BurgerFuel is a gourmet burger chain restaurant
The restaurant we went to was on Ponsonby Rd, Grey Lynn in Auckland. Grey Lynn is a trendy up and coming area and has a lot of specialist boutique shops in it. This location is also not a franchise of the BurgerFuel chain but an original store.
I had to the ‘Bacon Backfire’, a free-range grilled chicken breast, crispy bacon, brie, salad, relish, aioli. It was delicious; you can tell that they use only the best ingredients in their burgers.
Lee had the ‘Ring Burner’, 100% pure NZ grass fed beef, jalapeno sauce, bacon, salad, relish, aioli. He said it tasted great, but he did have an issue with the bun as it was not toasted and did become mushy towards the end.
We also had the Kumara Fries; Kumara is just Maori for sweet potato, and as BurgerFeul was born in New Zealand, Kumara though is a creamy white version, oppose to the orange version we know in England. They are so tasty and a little better for you than the humble potato.
We also had Motobites, Ok, these are sound odd, but excellent tasting. Only cooked in 100% pure canola oil that is low in saturated fats and is a source of beneficial Omega 3. It is 100% vegetarian society approved. We had eight crumbed pumpkin, carrot, chickpea & ginger bites with your choice of fresh, natural yoghurt relish dip. Oooo they were so good. Sweet, soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside.
We also indulged in a Thick shake each too; Lee had a chocolate one, and I had a caramel one. They were super thick, and I had to wait until I had finished my burger partially to be able to suck it up the straw. Omg, it was really good, I even liked lee’s, and I am not a fan of chocolate milkshake.
Value for money
Our meal came to around $50NZD, about £25 at the time. This was a little on the pricey side, compared to other burger chains but I would pay the extra any day as it was evident in the top quality of ingredients involved. The emphasis on the lighter way of cooking is a great aspect and also not one you find in many burger joints.
Its hard to comment on the atmosphere of this place because we weren’t visiting on at a time where we could see them be busy but even though this was the case they still had a casual trickle of trade come through the door. They do have a very strong BurgerFuel brand running through the restaurant, a strong punk vibe with a trendy menu. They also offer gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan and halal options on their menu too.
