Spending 24 Hours in Madrid

Madrid is a city with a lot of charm and lots to see, that can take you several days. But for those who like me, don’t have much time, and want to acquire an idea and, at the same time, some photos of the most representative places of the city, I am going to organize 24 hours in Madrid.

To begin with, if in your plans come to spend the day touring the city and sleep in it, I recommend you to book a room in a hotel close to Puerta del Sol. It is a well-communicated area and centrally located. I stayed at the Hostal Madrid Star. The service was great, the rooms were very nice and the location was the best. Very good quality price.

Another point to consider is the displacement. For long distances I recommend you to use the underground. It is very easy to use and cheap (a one-way ticket 1.50 euros). For short distances with the help of a map no problem, that the areas to which we are going to access are quite close to each other.

Let’s start with “the tour of Madrid in 24 hours”.

My path began in Puerta del Sol, known for being the place where Spanish people say goodbye to the old year and welcomes the new one. Following the Carrera de San Jerónimo street, we approach toward the building of the Congress of deputies, famous for his political activity, as well as by its two huge sculptures of lions, one on each side of the stairway; and the Museo Thyssen – Bornemisza. At the end of the street, you will also see the famous Prado Museum. Surrounding the area we can contemplate the sculptures of Spanish intellects.

We continued the tour and we approach the Atocha train station, it will accompany us arriving at the Cuesta de Moyano, in which we could find a beautiful book market with the rustic cabins and where we will be able to enjoy peculiar collections and books.

At the end of the Cuesta d Moyano, we enter in the Retiro Park. There we will be able to enjoy the wonderful picture of the Crystal Palace and the famous Pond so many times we have seen on postcards and magazines. It is very typical, and endearing, take a trip by boat. It is not expensive (the boat with the occupants for 45 minutes 6 euros) and that is something that you will remember for a lifetime. I take advantage of this wonderful place to make a stop on the way and have lunch at the same time I enjoyed the beautiful views.

After lunch, we go out of the park with Puerta de Alcalá direction. Once we have made our photo, we go straight on down Alcala Street in the direction of Plaza de Cibeles, where we will be able to see the great source and the Madrid City Hall.

Yes, now is the time to take the underground. We take it at Banco de España stop with direction to Santo Domingo. We got off at Santo Domingo. In this area, we will find the Royal Theatre, the Royal Palace and the Almudenas Cathedral. It is interesting to see the changing of the guard of the Royal Palace, is not as spectacular as that of London, but is curious at the same time.

When the sun is about to set, is the best time to go to visit the Temple of Debod, one of the great treasures hidden in Madrid. It was a gift from Egypt to Spain by helping to save the temples of Nubia. The photos of the sunset from there are amazing!

After this visit, we take the underground to lead us to our point of departure to rest for a while in the hotel before going out to dinner. I recommend going to dinner at some restaurant on the Gran Via. The offer of establishments for dinner is spacious with all kinds of specialities and budgets. After dinner, you can take a stroll through the shops to buy a souvenir of the city.

Hope you enjoy your trip as much as I did!
